Poetry invites readers to dance, to navigate a world of beauty and darkness, to think beyond their existence. Poetry used throughout the academic year can also allow your students to:
*Cite specific textual evidence to support conclusions and answers (1).
• Determine and analyze the theme of a text (2).
• Analyze the way ideas develop over the course of a text (3).
• Interpret words and phrases (4).
•Analyze connotative and figurative meanings of words (4).
• Analyze how word choice shapes a text (4).
• Analyze the structure of a text (5).
• Assess how point of view shapes a text (6).
• Analyze how two texts address the same theme (9).
Students can embrace their inner poet and determine poetic theme, infer, respond to character's actions, determine figurative language and/or analyze literary elements of a poem or any kind of literature using one or more of the following apps: Book Creator, Explain Everything, Procreate, Garage Band and iMovie.
Here's a timeline of lessons and a final integration example using Walt Whitman's: Captain My Captain:
Step 1:Teach Mini Lessons: figurative language: especially symbolism, poetic devices, Walt Whitman, Civil War's end for background knowledge
Step 2: Poems are close read independently or with a partner to determine figurative language meanings.
Step 3: Students practice orally read poem for expression, fluency, intonation, dramatic effect
Step 4: Students sketch their interpretation of the poem: Captain, My Captain with Explain Everything or a sketch app such as Procreate app and record the audio and the sketch movements.
Step 5: Students export their Explain Everything or equivalent as a movie file (Mp4) in the Camera Roll.
Step 6: Open iMovie app and drop in as a new movie.
(Not a trailer). Add text if you used Explain Everything for your poetic sketch. If you used Procreate app, bring into iMovie and record audio and text.
Step 7: Students Edit and export your video to Google Classroom for sharing!
