SPEED in the 21st Century Classroom
Mill Pond has been in the midst of a lightning fast cultural change. iPads are rolling in, tech guys are working their magic and teachers are integrating technology at breakneck speed to impact their students. All of the recent developments can make one's head spin...even the tech savvy among us...so it is with this exciting, but sometimes overwhelming feeling that I want you to remember one of my favorite quotes I learned from an endurance coach. A few years ago, I expressed that I was worried I would fall behind during a transition from the swim to the bike. I tend to forget things when I am nervous and after training for a year, one slip up and that would spell DISASTER for my yearlong effort. Coach Rich only said this to me: " Slow is smooth and smooth is fast." He explained that transitions are only effective if you go slow and if you are mindful. That advice served me well in that Ironman and it serves me well now as we transition into a 1:1 environment. Keep it steady, stay smooth and before you know it... you and your students will emerge as the winners.
Edmodo in the Classroom
Last week we introduced Edmodo to the staff. Edmodo is a learner management system that teachers across the country and the world use for their classrooms. Edmodo is an educational website that takes the ideas of a social network and refines them and makes it appropriate for a classroom. Using Edmodo, students and teachers can reach out to one another and connect by sharing ideas, problems, and helpful tips. A teacher can assign and grade work on Edmodo; students can get help from the entire class on Edmodo. It is a safe environment. Teachers can view and control all posts on Edmodo. Parents can join the class to bring a level of transparency that is difficult to achieve without technology. It is important to note that if you plan on using Edmodo in your class to send home a parent information and consent letter. Please click here (Edmodo Parent Letter) _
